What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Just a typical water change weekend with the exception that I didnt run the waste water outside during the cold snap. Did some extra scrubbing on the 300 around the gravel line to remove some algae and scrubbed the decor down a bit. Got 3/4 of the tank done and it looks pretty good so I will wait to finish off the other quarter.

Unbeknown at the time this was taken, but there was almost a foot air gap then a few more inches of ice. Fish survived in the mulm. Only reason it didn't fully drain was the hose froze shut.

Fish are ok, even the two baby goldfish from last yeat. Not sure about the loaches though.

Not exactly fish related, but somewhat, since it involves the water supply at the house.

This cold weather snap was the final straw for us with our plumbing at the house. We had experienced freeze ups on our kitchen sink when the temp hits 20 or below. Letting the faucet drip kind of helped but not always would work. Thankfully we are plumbed in PEX so it would take it each winter but we finally tackled it the right way. Pulled off the siding where the pipes ran and saw what was going on...

You can see PEX right up against the siding with no insulation between it and the outer wall, stub outs are also touching back wall with no insulation, dishwasher line tucked in but no insulation between it and the outer wall. Wish we caught this during construction. But who is to say it was enough insulation even if they had tucked it in. The house only has 2x4 walls, so that is only 3 1/2" of working room. We are abandoning the pipe there and rerunning the new lines on the inside of our kitchen cabinets where they will never freeze!

The company we hired got it done same day on the major part of the repair. The old pipes were disconnected and new supplies ran inside the cabinet so now we never have to worry about freeze ups! They reattached the old siding for the time being since it is a not too common size of 12" o.c. but that can be done a bit later, but for now its sealed up and we are back up and running.

So far it's drinking coffee and trying to decide just what in the heck is going on here lol School is starting late from the ice, so may as well stare at countless too small of pictures trying to figure out where I got these markings from lol

I think I have three different things going on.

"Angry eyebrows", body dot and ventral caudal line.

So I have influence from Cumana and Campoma (collection regions) strains and a dot that is fairly common. Still coloring up and a fairly shy male (hides in back a lot) Might try breeding him over the summer. He's neat and has a weird combo of markings, but not entirely sure he's worth playing with.

I had a conversation with someone new to fish about aggression. He was surprised at how aggressive the one red eyed monk tetra is. I told him he should stop by an watch my endler males flairing at each! :rofl.
I am seeing some of the desired johnfordii traits in the males I removed but they are not complete.

Thats how I have to explain all the tanks I have to others. The fact that fish like my red wolf and hairy puffer do not play well with others. I think a lot of people just assume everything they sell at the stores just gets along.

@VElderton's suggestion, I signed up for the GSAS Home Show this year, and was looking forward to their visit on Feb. 3. However, last night I received an e-mail from the event organizer saying that I had been bumped off the 13-member visit list because of 'issues' with the SEA-BI ferry. What? I'm disappointed, but what are you going to do? They do travel widely to visit people for the Home Show, even visiting @Orthopod's place last year to see his amazing setup, which is also in Poulsbo. Go figure.

Bummer,

I love that we have ferries out here still, so awesome. But, man do we suck at operating them. I don't expect Japanese train precision here, but at least North Korean precision would be nice lol

This is really too bad for them. You have one of the best Tanganyika focused fish rooms I've managed to sneak into, with enough diversity there's always something in a breeding phase to study. I would guess they will end up circling back though as they are likely aware of that too.

I have to take the ferry to Seattle tomorrow morning to retrieve the remains of my kitty that died recently. She is at Resting Waters in West Seattle, which does pet aquamation. I've used them previously because I just can't bear to put my kitties in the ground.

I've moved lots of fishes around recently- it's therapy- but the best tank at the moment is a 125 with some of my now-grown F1 progeny of the wild-caught Ophthalmotilapia nasuta Kipili Gold that I had a few years ago. The two co-dominant males have built awesome nests at the two ends of the tank, and spawning behaviours are nearly non-stop, but the females are still learning this whole mouthbrooder thing. I'd really like to get some F2's.

I also have my first fry from Xenotilapia melanogenys, which are super cute, and I continue to expand my two Cyprichromis colonies, both of which are now in 125's. It's remarkable how much happier these fishes are in 72" tanks.

Decided to "Breed" our Bettas today.

Kiddo has been begging since before he had a Betta to do it lol So perhaps maybe. The plan was to use our bubble building and fry protecting perfect dad Milic and not breed my son's crowntail. Well, I decided to let the boys tell me the answer lol

Well, if I do this it's gonna be the crowntail lol

Straight up ignores poor Petunia. Meanwhile blaze was dancing when she was a foot away from his tank lol Snuggled up along side her (separated of course)

Even if I don't breed them, I think it was good enrichment for them all. Milic will get more chances, but his first two were not good lol Blaze has never built a nest before. Milic hasn't built one in a couple weeks. But does for days straight when he does.

Yesterday was water change day on all tanks ( plus gravel vac).

I moved my 13” Dovii hybrid to a 75 so I could allow one of my larger sailfin plecos to go in and eat the green algae on his tank . Of course I could scrape it, but my sailfin loves this stuff. I’ll move my pleco back to his 75 and move the Dovii hybrid back next weekend.

I also bought some kanaplex for my 15” midas as his eyes are cloudy again ( his girlfriend keeps biting him to get him to breed)…i think he’s running his face into the wood when he spins to tell the female to knock it off. It’s crazy to me that they have a 220g and yet they still bicker. Haha

My bedroom discus tank is doing well, though the higher temps are not good for my live plants in there. I need to find a company that makes quality realistic like plants to swap them out.

Today we dug around in the 125 a little looking for standard albino BNP females and found a couple good ones. Setting a trap up tonight and will hopefully have her in the first few tries.

The other evening I actually had enough time to enjoy watching the tanks for a while when the lights were nice, I might have to start thinning the crypts in the 125 to get the other stuff up to height quicker.

Spotted sausage catfish?
This had me laughing for a minute. Tatia intermedia, or the driftwood catfish. My wife calls them the ugly peanut fish because of the silhouette they have when the back light is on and they go swimming in the mid water zone. They hide in nooks all day but once the sunset mode hits they get active. They do snap food up off the bottom but I see them grabbing flakes and micro pellets from the mid water too.

They are softer water (the commonly recommended pH vs what was observed with these seems to be off) specialty fish that were passed along to me by another member here and they really brighten up the entertainment value when the night mode is running. I have 3 of them, two males and a female. Every couple months I get a big ole blob of eggs that typically make it to the wriggle phase before the snails eat them all. I think one day I'll pull some eggs and put them in a breeder box to hatch without the snails but I'm not ready for that yet and the demand isn't high, despite being pretty fun to watch.
