What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Was running errands this morning and for fun stopped at the Lakewood Petco. Was surprised to see a couple plecos that you normally would not see at a place like this, I believe a gold nugget and a green phantom. Also super surprised to see a bunch of discus and Taiwan reef cichlids. This Petco always seems to get the unique stuff but it was still unexpected.

Had some gift cards and a reward on my account so I stopped at the Lakewood Petsmart yesterday looking for a couple simple community fish to add the my little 46g bowfront. Was pretty disappointed in their fish stock... Ever since the tanks got redone there, it has been super lame stock. So I ended up buying nothing and will likely go to one of the better Petsmarts like Lacey or Tacoma off Union. Sadly I wasnt looking for anything out of the ordinary, just a few gourami and the Lakewood Petsmart disappointed me big time.

Water change and gravel vac on my planted 75g discus tank today. Last week I over cleaned the tank and filter and had a mini crash, but I then added media from another tank and things are getting back together.

Today I also swung into AP to drop off some extra rainbow cichlids I didn’t have a plan for and to buy some more frozen bloodworms. Finally, I moved my poleni cichlid female to my living room tank as that tank over the last year has had all of my cories pass away and I was left with just a school of monk tetras and one lone old yellow guarami that will be relocated to the discus tank tomorrow. I did see that I still have my two large bumblebee cats in the tank too, but they are hidden under my large driftwood piece.

The one thing that bugs me about the living room tank is that the color of the tank always looks yellow. I’ve done monster water changes and even played with the different settings on the lights. I think my next move will be different substrate but I want something that is good with plants and makes colors pop.

Moved a few more French blue Endler males around and a couple more females now that I know what most of them are lol I decided to take the strain and stick to the basic markings, just better with a few upgrades my colony has developed.

My selected males have a dark black stomach from the gills back. Top fin is speckled black, tail is black with orange or white as usual, just more vibrant. The blue is darker with a bit of purple to it with an orange chest. I'm at 5 males now and still being picky. They all have good combinations of what I want.

This is a French blue x cobra I'm working on. His blue is good for my colony in general. But a decent comparison to where I'm taking it. I want to eventually cross these and my monocle males back with my "improved" French blues to make them darker. Hoping at that point I can get the blue topfin into these ones too. (From my 2 yr on cross of French blue cobras)

Monocle. I want more monocles but I also need to breed out the irridescence green and double sword as well. I know that female won't help, but I want more of her too and he's a good match to help. She's a nigcracaudal veil tail mosaic (ish partial guess) so she'll help the black belly. Just need to bring in some magenta to darken the blue.

Water changes with some gravel vac on most of the tanks this morning. All 7 tanks done!

Spotted the new L397 pleco this morning, so tiny that it disappears easily. Seems to have made its home on the large spiderwood in the tank. It has adopted a dark coloration to match the wood, which is sad because it was very light with distinctive banding when I got it. It was living inside a white ornament at the store and showed very light.

Thanks. Most of those are mutations that appeared this past year.

Some other strains I'm working on, creating and nice boys lol
Triple sword French blue. Not being bred, just way over the top lol
PXL_20231123_161755014.jpg

Pintail Cobra. Male is a French blue f saddleback Queen Cobra (she ain't a king! Lol) That has blue on his head and two blue dots on his caudal. He has brothers missing the double dot or pin, but I want those
PXL_20231130_180944053.jpg

White peacock and wild guppies with snakeskin females. Looking for wild type males expressing very early patterns as well as more caudal star males to breed body colors over.
I would like to create a caudal star French blue at some point.
PXL_20231109_213705096.jpg

Magenta male / French blue x saddlebackl x king cobra female mother. I want to cross these back to French blue x King Cobra females to strengthen the tigrinus patterning and improve the pink / magenta maybe bring in a black belly.
PXL_20231224_193002238.jpg

Boys tank. Everything that has mutations, isn't what I want etc....They get a pond with ladies from the girls tank in summer and I see what I get / how far I can push it temp wise. I get some pretty tough fish outta there.

Forgot the cobras. Culls from various cross tanks / not up to std. Those black tailed females I'm kind of at a loss with right now unless I want to breed very dark fish :( She's a magenta saddleback cobra. Just a crazy internal fight to genetically dominate itself lol

I bought a juvenile marbled sailfin pleco a week ago to go in the discus tank and it was super light brown with the swirls and now it is super dark to match the bog wood. I’m as disappointed as you when they do this, but I understand why.

Forgot I split the microfauna culture again due to growth. So I have two spares now, one spoken for. But if anyone else needs a starter culture.

Also added the four pink ramshorns I found spread across tanks to start a pink culture to go with the pink Endlers we are going to stock the wife's office aquarium with. In the future. She still has a cobra guppy in there and is going to be getting a new office at a larger clinic soon so we'll have to move it anyway.

Or set up another tank in her main office since she'll be running two hospitals anyway lol

Knew I could do it!

All three daphnia colonies collapsed lol

Springtails, worms and scuds are still doing their thing. The small and large daphnia are gone, but the medium are still scooting about. Basically lost the old ones (including breeders) and the young. Smelled a little funky this morning. Just bought new yeast after running out. Wonder if active / inactive makes a difference.

Oh well. There's still life in there, it'll bounce back and probably be a bit more resilient.

I got a new years “unwanted” surprise this morning…

My fahaka puffer (11”) was floating dead at the top of the tank. I’m not sure what happened as it attacked some frozen ( thawed) krill last night like it always does every 3rd day I feed it.

The water did feel a little bit warm so tomorrow I’m going to buy a thermometer to check the tank temp as it my other thermometers are the ones I stick to the front glass and this one didn’t have one.

On the bright side: I now have four beautiful discus swimming in my bedroom 75g. They are interesting as even though they are known to be delicate, they can be rather mean to each other.

I sold my lace rock today to one of the O.G.s of Fishbox….

He is just getting back into the hobby and will be focusing on tangyikan cichlids like he did the last time I was at his old house ( maybe 2015ish).

He’s looking for some specifics and I let him know we have two members who are very knowledgable in this field and “new” meaning joined after he had left the hobby.

I’m sure sirkeith and fishguy1978 will make him feel welcomed once he joins!

Looking forward to that. I've been here since 2014, so maybe I know this person? I also knew a Tanganyikan fish-keeper on here who left the hobby at about that time; in fact, I adopted many of his fishes, and still have them, like these-
