What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Hadn’t needed to order food in a while so as Im putting all the stuff I need in my online cart… well you guys know, next thing you ask is ‘how did it come out to $50 already?’ lol
So nothing exciting just ordered some fish foods. The little silver dollars can really pack it away and now with the Oscar in the big tank, he has been eating more too. Well that has made the pearsei more competitive and its been eating a lot as well.

@fishguy1978, glad you were able to get that 125.
Me too! I commented to the fellow that he must have had someone flake out. He had multiple people asking for dimensions or "Can I fit that in my non-pickup? He had several show up and back out because it's "Too big.":lol He saw my email and knew he had found a taker.

The 6' 125 gallon tank is really a great size that allows for quite a few options with fish. I really wish my garage fishroom had two of these. There are just so many limitations with 4ft tanks with the larger fish I like to raise. Even used just as grow out tanks its a pain. I used to have a 120g 5' long tank that I loved, and wouldnt mind that in the fishroom either. look forward to seeing what you set up in it.

Didn't want to start a separate thread on this so Im just posting it here: Do you guys find any particular fish foods that really intensify the reds in fish? I know krill is one of the things I should be feeding but any other pellet food suggestions? I know NLS makes a red formula and Hikari make a blood parrot formula that is supposed to be toward the reds...

I’ve tried the blood parrot mix from hikari and didn’t notice any additional increases in the red coloring of my old festae. I did have some specialty flowerhorn food I bought from a guy online. It made my old flowerhorn crazy beautiful, but sadly with the genetic fragility of the fish, he only lived about a year!

But I’ve gone back to southern delight as I find my fish the most healthy and beautiful using that.

They are currently eating powerfeed, but o did use the growth pellets before. Soon, I’ll transition them over to the large cichlid formula.IMG_4076.jpeg

Thanks @lloyd378, appreciate the info. Im currently just feeding my red spot sevs Omega One Super Color Kelp pellets and some occasional frozen spirulina mysis shrimp and krill. Not enough krill apparently to make a difference in color. And not enough mysis shrimp since I lost my little tire track eel. :( Too much competition for food and it wasn’t very food driven to come out of hiding to eat.

Water changes today.

Also got one of my many fish foods in, with the others coming over the next week. The one disadvantage of an Amazon order, its hard to get multiple foods from the same vendor at the same time.

Water change on the 300 this morning, hooked up my drain pump to a sprinkler and used the tank water on the lawn

I try to use tank water on lawn as much as possible instead of dumping down the drain.

@lloyd378, decided to switch over to Omega One Super Color pellets on the Severums to see if I can get reds to pop

I know that many Oscars that are fed Hikari Cichlid Gold tend to really get intense reds, this might be what i try next. My sevs have great growth but the red colors just are not present. Ive up'd water changes on them to twice a week and will see if the food makes any difference. Ive done regular NLS in the past and did not see the guaranteed color in 30 days like promised buy maybe the NLS Red might be a different story...

It could just be the genetics of your specific fish. If your fish come from stock that is not intense red, then maybe you’ve reached what they are capable of producing. I’d guess no food will actually bring out more than the genetics would allow.

Can you take a couple of pictures of your sevs I. Their current state?

I know the one time I had one, it was crazy intense reds from the size of a quarter on up. Sadly, it was a victim of that weird disease that wiped out my tank a few years back.

I’ll look for a picture of my old one for you.

You could also just trick your eyes and use an intense yellow colored light. I hear that’s what sellers in Thailand do to entice potential buyers in America to buy their “red Texas” and flowerhorns.

@lloyd378, This is the dominant one with the most color, the others are pretty much the same

Just took the pic, no edit except to crop and take a bit of reflection out. Colors are what what I see all the time, no reds are popping in my "Red Spot" sevs.

Interesting… to me, the untrained professional, it looks like a high quality gold severum.

I grabbed a couple of pics from google for reference.

The first pic is the red spot severum and the second one is the gold.IMG_4090.jpegIMG_4091.jpeg

I used to have a gold that had very red worming pattern on the face, very similar to the 2nd pic. The current fish I have do look a little bit differently than a gold but not by much.

Went back and looked at pics from Imperial Tropicals and the young fish were quite yellow looking. One pic looks much redder of a bit older looking sev, much like your old fish.

Im going to try ‘color’ type foods and see if anything changes.

Dumb question… Do these line bred severum “peel” like an amphilophus?

Great question. I’m not sure as the one I had was red from the get go…..I’ve never heard of severums doing that, but I’m also not an expert with that species.

With that said, I know of a few fish that “peel” “fade” or whatever you want to call it when they drop their full grey colors and mature into their adult colors….

Amphilophus
Parachromis ( Dovii , RTM etc)
Chronoheros umbee
Vieja ( or whatever they are classified as now).
