What did you do with your tank(s) today?

I cleaned some filters today and RED, my 10 year old trimac is not looking that good. I think he may be on one of his last fins now… kind of swimming sideways with his mouth pointed to the surface.

I’m going to do another water change on his tank tomorrow and see if I can get him to turn the corner.

If he does pass, then Hoffa, my 11” Dovii X Jag will inhabit the 180 and the female trimac will be moved on. Probably to madness who has some males still.

@lloyd378, Sorry to hear about Red’s decline he is a sweet looking beast of a Trimac. Hopefully he pulls through.

Got home from work and moved the oscar into the 300 and have my 90 set up as a quarantine/grow out tank for the next couple months for the incoming setiger silver dollars.

I watched the Oscar all evening in the 300 to make sure he was adapting well and in typical Oscar fashion seemed to pout and sit in a corner most of the night. Thankfully the pearsei did not attack him or the Oscar did not try and fight. The pearsei went up close a number of times to check out his new tankmate and no issues. I really hope these two can get along for the long term. They seem very compatible at the moment. The Oscar has always been on the shy side in the 90g and Im hoping with the outgoing nature of the pearsei, it may become a bit more outgoing too. Time will tell.

The oscar is very shy in the big tank. He is afraid of a lot of things and is still hiding behind a lot of the decor. At least there is no fighting with the pearsei.

Love the Silver Dollars. Can't wait to see them as adults! :thumbsup
Thanks, I used to have a nice group of seven red hooks but rehomed them when I decided to try a cichlid community tank. Even as skittish as the red hooks could be, the tank was always calm and peaceful compared to trying to get a bunch of different cichlids to get along.

Currently the Oscar is still trying to adjust to the high traffic area of the house in the big tank. There has been no aggression on its part toward the pearsei or the other way around for that matter. It had a big spook of some sort last night and there was a big splash and it was in the corner of the tank all evening. I think it was scared of the big bala and freaked a little. This morning it was in a different corner of the tank and acting calm. This guy is not a big swim around the tank fish. It likes to kind of have a 'pit' and sit in it. I hope he perks up a bit because he could add a ton of movement to the tank if he settles in.

I’m sure it will just take some time…. I’m guessing once it gets used to the other fish out and about and eating that it will mimic them too.

The new SD's are skittish as expected. Wonder if they would be calmer with another larger calmer fish in there with them? Considering moving out two of my red spot severums with them. Really only want to keep one in my 90g community... Thoughts? Any other ideas for something to keep with them that might calm them down?

I would just give it time. They should settle down after a week or so.

Hopefully they do!

I do feel as if I should add some clean up crew. My green phantom pleco has been coming ot a lot more now since the big oscar is out of there. I just dont feel he gets the smaller pellets that the SD's are missing. A catfish would work but they cant be too little, no cory cats, and I already have the hoplo in the other tank.... will have to think of something for this tank

Dmd, I’d also just wait and allow them some time to adjust.

With that said, I went to AP today, but most of their tanks were being medicated so I instead went to Lakewood petco.

I was in search and still am of a large marble sailfin pleco, but I did find a little regular spotted sailfin at petco so I bought that and also bought 9 serpae tetras for my planted tank.

It was a good deal. They are normally 2.99 each but were on sale for 3 for $6.

The SD’s got to deal with a water change. It was a full gravel vac with only about 25% getting changed out but in the couple days I have had them I have been heavy handed with feeding. The water change went smoothly, the fish were really pretty calm during the process.

Today I git quite a moment with the oscar in the 300. He didnt run off and hide, stayed out for feeding with the other fish and no issues getting along. He still doesn’t eat the pellet mix I feed the others but did eat a few of his normal algae wafers. He is a bit reclusive compared with the pearsei but that probably will help him become what oscars generally are known for, outgoingness, lol.

I did realize I also created a problem or maybe an opportunity. I move the Oscar out of the 90g tank, and it has my green phantom pleco and the SD growouts. What happens when they growouts are grown? Well they go to the 300 AND the tank becomes open for something else… hadn’t thought of that :)

What new project next?

Altum angel fish school
Discuss school

Or outside the box: brackish tank or gulper catfish or a Madagascar themed tank( there are some beautiful fish that can be had if you get lucky enough to source them).

I saw the 3 beautiful discus at aquarium paradise the other day and now I have a need to have some in my life at some point. I think I’d start with the more natural looking ones as they seem to be a lot cheaper.

I’d like to have 3 maybe 4 in my planted 75g.
