What did you do with your tank(s) today?

The only tank I'm going to get to "add" back is the 29 3D tank. Conditionally the snake must die first, eliminating that 20 long, and I need to find a "normal" stand for it to put the tops of all the tanks +/-6". I have been thinking pretty seriously about re-designing that sump under the big tank though, could make a refugium style grow out that I'm sure those species could handle.

Honestly though it's one hobby to another. My son's have started playing trombone, the older boy has been at it for a couple years now. I played though some college and have a small collection of horns so I get to turn the other half of the room into a small studio with a desk to write music at. It's not a new to me thing, but something I forgot I loved until I finally picked up a horn and blew with the kids last Christmas. The couple big tanks sure are easier to maintain than the old planted display breeding set up. I'm even getting "experimental" again and have pH in that big tank I was too nervous to bring small tanks down to. Maybe why the woodcats are breeding, not good for the snails or certain plants though. I have several "lace lily pads" lol.

After the loss of the big bala on Sunday, I stopped by Aquarium Paradise for a look at what big fish they had and pretty much the normal fare of oscars and some other cichlids. Nothing of interest to me. Its a bit of an issue having the two bichirs. I have to make sure replacement fish are not too small or else they will get eaten and I need to avoid fish that would suck the slime coat off them. The choices of fish that I know I can get ahold of would be more (medium sized) bala sharks or maybe some silver dollars. Having kept both Im leaning towards neither, lol. If I did silver dollars, I would likely try for some more 'rare' types that you dont see often.

If anyone has ideas of something to add or where they have seen some larger fish available. let me know.

Farmland in Silverdale has an overstocked tank of monsters, allot of them I believe we're surrenders/returns. They don't necessarily have them listed "for sale" but in talking to them before they have said they would let them go to the right places. Next time I'm through there I'll take a picture of the tank for you to see if anything strikes you as interesting.

Been there, and that is where I know they have A LOT of balas in the medium sized range. I know they had a couple large red spot severums when I was there last but If I were to do that, I would just move my severum growouts to the large tank (again too small at the moment). But if you are in the area and spot something of interest, let me know.

A bit of time off for a “Stay-cation” day that involved a deep clean of my Oscar tank. This involved cleaning both Aquaclears and even the glass top’s getting taken apart, the plastic channels cleaned out and the hard water deposits razor scraped off. The tank is like new, lol. The tank has been a challenge with the summer sun coming in and algae growth despite a weekly cleaning.

It has been about a year since I’ve seen my bumbler bee cats. Today, however, I saw two of them at 3” long. I got one of those “fishguy1978” style pics where it’s more of a hide and seek picture ( look under the gouramis eye and you can see some side markings).

Anyways, in my planted 75g I typically only feed flakes but today I decided to drop in a couple of pleco pellets and some catfish pellets ( dr, bassler) as my two big bull BN plecos have been doing a bit of territorial bickering.

Here are some. Pics …. Full tank shot, some rams on fish pics, and finally the hide and seek picIMG_3239.jpegIMG_3248.jpegIMG_3241.jpegIMG_3246.jpegIMG_3242.jpegIMG_3245.jpegIMG_3238.jpeg

Was interesting that my phone did the year ago today pics and I had lost my last big bala then. And almost a year later lost another. My current bala which was the biggest seems much calmer than the others Ive lost. Im still uncertain what I want to add to the 300 as its a very empty, dull looking tank at the moment. I really dont want to do the multiple cichlid thing because its always a fine balance and if one thing is off, then the whole tank is a hot mess of aggression. Leaning towards a larger schooling fish, but not silver dollars, maybe a type of barb? Been looking on Craigslist to see if any larger fish get posted but nothing that I think would work in my mix.

Tinfoil barbs would give a similar look to the bala sharks…. They get big too.

The bala sharks are easygoing feeders, I have heard the tinfoils can be aggressive eaters? I like the calm in the tank, lol

If I put them on a spectrum they would be between your bala and silver dollars.

Okay, I cant believe Im saying this but... I might actually consider adding silver dollars again. The happiest day of fish keeping was when I rehomed by group of red hooks but that was when they were in a 6' 210 gallon and they needed more space. I dont remember having them in the 300 so it might just be what Im looking for.

Problem is that Im a bit of a fish snob and only want the rare or unusual types. I loved the elongated red hook and had one with red body spots that was my favorite. Wished the entire group was that type but the red hooks are a bit harder to find and had only seen a couple of that variety over the years.

So now the dilemma, what to get?
I can order thin bar, wide bar, tiger stripe quite readily but the holy grail is the Myleus setiger or "sailfin red hook"

Sailfin-Red-Hook-Silver-Dollar.jpg

I can find 3 online but they are over $100 each! I love the tiger stripe the next and are a bit more affordable, so this might be my second option.

Let me know if you guys spot any of these 'unusual' or rare type dollars at any of the fish stores.

Put myself on email alert with Wet Spot for a couple silver dollars they are out of stock on.

Seriously considering ordering from exoticfishshop.net but they only have six of the tiger stripe silver dollars and I like to do odd numbers on schooling fishes and wanted seven. Still looking online…

I’m in San Diego now and will be in LA for the the weekend. If I see any local stores, I’ll stop in check and ask if they ship.

I don’t think sea world will have what you are after. Haha

I’ve always wanted to check out Pet Zone down there. I know they ship but the shipping cost is kind of high

In my sliver dollar hunt, I found an interesting company with pretty fair price and free shipping at a point that I was at with the order. Of course I then Google search reviews on them and a bunch of BBB complaints, lol. Though the company did respond to all the claims it seemed really common that they were substituting fish. You pick and pay for a large fish yet they will sub out small because they 'ran out' of large.

Pet zone was nice.

Clean tanks, good prices, especially for California and some real nice aquascaped tanks.

They had endli bichirs at 7” for 35! With that said they didn’t have anything special that we could not get here….

Drove out to Midway and looked around for fish and saw a group of 4 regular silver dollars that could be dropped into the 300 at $29 each. But I didn’t want regular ones so I passed on them. They had one red hook that was healthy but that was it, the other was on deaths door and this would be months of growing out in garage tanks before being able to move into the 300. Passed on anything at Midway.

Then drove to Sierra and looked around, nothing caught my eye there either. Again empty handed.

Stopped at Peto in Lakewood and they got in some more golden killies and I picked up two to add to my group of 4.

Lost a female swordtail and female apisto. Both in different tanks and no real reason as to why.
