Ranchu update: Yesterday was 3rd day of treatment and I notice the redness gone from lateral line. A little spot looks swollen but with redness gone, looks like it might be going down. The fish has only been eating a medicated food for the past week and Im almost done with that batch. I ordered some of the Dr. Bassler Forte food to be able to feed the fish to see if it can boost the immune system as claimed. So far this treatment seems the most promising and I now feel confident that I may get the fish into the main tank in a couple weeks. The fish thankfully has been eating like a champ through this whole time.

As to the rest of the goldies, they are all very healthy and thriving. Cant believe how outgoing these fish are! Wondering if the addition of the ranchu to the 65B will make that tank a bit more 'friendly'. With just the three fish they just are not as outgoing as the five fish in the 90g. Hopefully I can move the ranchu over soon and find out.

Ranchu update: Fish has been looking pretty good for quite a few days now. The Hikari BiFuran+ has done the trick. Today will be the 7th and final dose of the medication. After that I will watch the fish for about a week with just regular water changes and then see how it progresses. If it is still clear after that, then it will go in its permanent home.

Normally not my favorite look in goldfish with the big buggy eyes but I really like this guy a lot

My fish enjoy the Dr bassler stuff
Ive used it in the past and the green formula and the herbal both have like a weird powder on the pellets. This leaves a bit of scum on the water surface. The ranchu went after the forte formula without any resistance. And I chose that one since I had been dealing with the illness with it for a while now and it was designed as an immune booster. The main goldfish tanks were fed herbal and they went at it in the same way as their normal feed. This is formula is supposed to be good with color. I wont feed herbal exclusively to the main tanks but likely forte to the ranchu for the immune boosting for sure for the next week before moving him over to his permanent home.

Hmm... My ranchu looks better with no red inflammation along the lateral line but then it is not 100% laying flat. Looks a bit like it's still raised up in that area. At this point I finished the medication and have been doing fin level water changes using aged water from one of the other goldie tanks. I am continuing to watch the fish and it shows absolutely no distress and eats like a champ but the raised area does worry me a little. I guess at this point what's an extra week or two? lol

Ugh, the stupid spot is inflamed. Ive tried to get better pics. Its a little point protruding out and it will get red. Kind of like a pimple with a white head look about it. It almost has a bit of look like an anchor worm but no tail protruding. It seems to have a mind of its own and doesn't always respond to medicine. From what Im reading, because of all the various meds Ive put at this fish, I should wait a bit and try another treatment.

At this point the only thing that I have to try on hand is API Fin and Body which has Doxycycline as the main ingredient. The BiFuran seemed to work well but I had completed the recommended course of time and it had looked as if it had cleared. Whatever this thing is Ive seen it respond to water changes sometimes, salt sometimes and the Bifuran, The metro in the water and in food didnt seem like much of anything, kanplex not really anything either.

I got my shipment of koi Nitrofurazone that I could try again. Recommended treatment is only five days. For now Ive added salt and am thinking of what I want to try next.

I had been using aquarium salt but only at a concentration of 1 Tablespoon to 5 gallons of water. I was reading the Aquarium Co-Op instructions and saw the starting rate should be 1 Tablespoon per 3 gallons of water. So I am trying this first since I see a bit of reduction in redness and I didn’t even have the concentration high enough.

I very much doubt that minor difference in NaCl concentration is going to make much of a difference. Personally, I'd give this poor fish a break from all the antimicrobials- all drugs have side effects- and then perhaps his immune system have a shot.

Yeah, I haven’t dosed any more meds but went the natural route with salt since I saw a bit of improvement using it.

Agree with Keith on the break from meds. It may even be a benign cyst or other skin/scale lesion that gets inflamed occasionally but ultimately does no harm. I get how annoying it can be to look at though… it’s why I did surgery on my wolf’s lip a while back. I am glad the lateral line inflammation resolved. Those fish are so adorable!

Im totally hooked on the goldfish, the cuteness factor just has given me a renewed interest in the hobby. But I am trying to keep it to just the two tanks, though there are a few other types I wouldn’t mind adding but they are so messy and I am already well stocked…unless I just want more work for myself, lol

The ranchu showing signs of improvement I think. The redness and swelling went down with a little white spot still protruding.

I increased the salt concentration just a bit to the mid level of 1 Tablespoon to 2 gallons of water.

The ranchu is looking better with the redness and swelling almost completely gone and the white protruding part is also disappearing. The salt treatment does work for whatever this is. Im still at the mid level of 1 Tablespoon to 2 gallons water and have been doing 50% water changes and still keeping salinity the same. Also been feeding the Bassleer Forte which is supposed to boost the immune system.

Still on the lookout for a final goldie for the 65B that would replace my Apache ranchu that had turned gold and lost the black. New stock in weekly at three vendors that carry the types I want and still nothing after some weeks of waiting.

Since converting the lower 65B over to the black substrate and the large black centerpiece slate from Universal Rocks, the tank is a bit 'off'. Im guessing its my lighting. I had moved the Beamswork LED fixture up into the racking to get a cleaner look which worked fine with the lighter substrates but now its almost as if I have some shadowing that makes the tank not look right. I actually turn the led brightness up a bit and it helped a little but I think I might put the fixture back, directly on top of tank and see how it looks. I will probably do that this weekend since I will have multiple timers to work on because of the time change.
