My fancy goldfish tank(s)

A few posts back there were some update pics of all the goldies and they are all looking very healthy including the Ranchu in time out (quarantine). I am at the higher salt dose and will run that till this upcoming Sunday and then will begin the slow dilution back to freshwater. Really looks as if the weird swollen spots are gone for good and the hope is in two weeks the fish will go into the 65B permanent home.

Been a long road with this one, but he is looking really good. Though not a perfect 'milk cow' he has a lot of good features like the large black blocks, a nice round belly, decent spinal curve and a good angle with the tail. A little less orange, smaller sized tail and he would be much closer to the ideal 'milk cow' but for the price I got him for, he is a looker.

I'm curious- who decides what is 'ideal'? In the cat world, it's the associations (TICA and CFA) that set breed standards and run shows, and those standards are largely arbitrary and change over time, according to fashion. For example, there are no size standards for breeds like Persians or Ragdolls, but the big kitties seem to win more often than not. My adult Ragdolls all came from a cattery that produced championship kitties, but they tended to be small, with females ~10 pounds, and males perhaps 15 pounds. My new kittens are from a different cattery, and all 3 of them are already 8 pounds at 5 months old, so they are going to be big kitties. Really doesn't matter to me, one way or another.

For me the ranchu is a pet and not a competition fish but I do try and look for the favorable traits common to a champion. I dont know who in the goldfish world sets the standards.... I guess I will need to learn some foreign languages (likely Chinese and Thai since these seem the most common areas of goldfish breeding now) to be able to research more, lol

Oh, it's Steve. He's the guy who decides. Everyone just asks Steve.

The ranchu is doing well. Have not seen a flare up or redness in about a week now. Im at the high salt concentration and it seems to have helped a lot. I will likely do a water change tonight and continue with the salt level until sunday and then do a slow transformation back to 100% fresh. This could be it, the reality of being able to move the fish into the big tank with the others!

Still on the lookout for a replacement fish for my other ranchu that lost its black coloration. Really have wanted a 'Shogun' type oranda but they are expensive and not all the vendors carry them. That particular fish comes from Shogun farms and has a bit more size and bulk to it. I have found one online that would work out good but was a different color than I had originally wanted with it being a calico with quite a bit of white in it. This may actually be a better mix of color for my tank. Tonight is when multiple online vendors release new fish so we will see what new stock becomes available.

Yesterday afternoon I started the freshwater water changes on the ranchu in QT. Doing 5 gallon changes at the moment to get all the salt out and then will see if it continues looking good, and if so... it can finally go in with the other goldies!

I found a Shogun farms oranda I like and am seriously considering it but this one is really expensive at $250 not counting shipping cost. The fish is not super special in coloration with it being mostly a white/calico type but it has the big, bulky body characteristics typical of a 'Shogun' fish. I do have a 10% off first order coupon but it is still more than what i typically spend on a single goldie.

Are you a Veteran? If so, maybe ask for a Veterans Day discount.

Nope, not a Veteran. The site has no other deals except the first time buyer one. I knew I would be looking at big money for a 'Shogun' goldfish. Continuing to think about it and hoping someone else buys the fish so I am not tempted any more... lol. Even if that one were to sell they have another smaller one that I like that is still $180... That one is a short fin and the other one I want is a longer fin type.

Maybe a black Friday sale is coming...
I'd wait a week and see. Also I figure if you already dropping that much, may as well get the one you really want. But I'm probably not the one to talk to about that. I can be a bit of an enabler. Lol

We all kind of are enablers in this hobby. Its so much easier to tell someone they should get something when its not your money, lol. Even if there was a sale it would still be an expensive fish. Maybe I should give up on a 'Shogun' farms fish and just get a regular one. But I will wait a bit and see...

Not an outrageous color but it has the Shogun build Ive been looking for. My Yuan Bao orandas are similar but this one has the bulk and shape Im looking for.

Wow. And people talk about what we've done to dogs.
Hadn’t even thought of it that way, but very true.

While the “Shogun” style of oranda are big, bulky fish, the Azumanishiki or Azuza Nishiki goes the other way and is a long skinny oranda. Seems country of origin seems to dictate a lot of difference in what traits are bred into the fish. When you look at the simple Wakin that was likely the source of all the fancy goldfish today, a lot was done…and I will admit not all good. Honestly I still cant believe I like these things so much yet cant stand blood parrot’s, lol.
