What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Those bricks are super cool looking! I like the idea of the artificial reef!

mid you ever become inundated and need to cull, if they are between 1-2” I know my fahaka puffer would enjoy them ( food not friends).

but here’s hoping they fade sooner than later for you!

I have about 100 in the 1-2" range and 30 or so in the 2-3" range that I need to move. You're welcome to however many you want, you'd just need to get them while they're in a 40 breeder and not the 400 gallon. This third batch has faded at almost 50% of the spawn so far, the first two batches I only got about 10-25% faded after a much longer time so I am going to pull the third batch from the big tank and sort the faders.

Spawns were -

Male #1 (unfaded) x female #1 (faded) ~25% faded fry
male #2 (faded) x female# 2 (faded) ~ 5% faded (2 out of ~100)
male #2 (faded) x female #1 (faded) ~ 50% faded at 1"

So the genetics are interesting. I did grow out several to get my breeders and I had several fade at the 4-5" mark I just don't have the time or space to wait for hundreds of dovii to get that size. Pond maybe!?

@Modest_Man, those are very interesting bricks. Any idea their specific purpose for that shape?

I have no idea. The house was built in 1912 and there is a lot of random bricks that I'm digging up throughout the yard. One of the has some stamped markings that I meant to take a photo of but forgot. They're some sort of structural clay tile that seem to have been popular around the early 1900's but the pictures I can find online don't show any like these.

I have dealt with many unusual fish diseases over the years and have successfully dealt with some and had others that stumped me to this day. I never have had fish with this one before so I had just assumed a typical decor related injury.

Today I dont know what to make of things. The wound itself seems to look a bit better but the fish is very inactive. Was just sitting on the bottom of the tank a lot this evening. Not really interactive with me or even other tankmates. Of course with the two big fish both having issues, the other two are being total jerks since they are not being put in their place. The midas with the swim bladder issue has not been fed for two days now to see if it helped and not seeming to be a factor.
If its an internal, systemic issue, then it will be difficult to know what's going on, and the appearance of the surface lesions will not be particularly informative. The best sign will be if he becomes more active, and for that, only time will tell. I do think you're doing all you can at this point. Is he eating?

Sadly the big devil was dead this morning. Measured in at 12”.

Now to deal with the midas with the swim bladder issue. Today is day 3 of no feeding, this morning it swims around like there is no issues but later in the day it just floats head down like it cant right itself. He was getting challenged by the other two fish and he couldn’t right himself to really put them in their place. Ive read a ton of stuff on the whole thing and honestly I dont see this a curable…

Give it to me straight guys. Swim bladder issues, worth trying or should I euthanize the fish?

Really sorry to hear about the big guy. When I saw him last weekend I thought that this would be the outcome. With lesions on both flanks and other systemic effects readily apparent, e. g. the nuchal hump shrinkage, it seemed clear that there were some serious internal issues from which he would be unlikely to recover. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he had multiple tumors internally, but that's just a guess. Perhaps I should have said something then, but I didn't feel it was my place to speculate on a doomsday scenario, especially as we had just met, and there was no way to be sure at that point anyway.

As for the Midas with the swim bladder issues, if this were my fish, I would euthanize him. I have never seen a cichlid recover from this kind of thing in many years of fish keeping. More bad news, I'm afraid.

Really a lousy situation for you to be hit by these things all at once. Hope you don't feel too badly, and can look forward to some new fishes and a fresh start.

Thank you @sir_keith, I appreciate the honesty. After all my research on the swim bladder issue, I pretty much concluded it would be best to euthanize but I just wanted another opinion.

Hate that it all happened at the same time! Sometimes you have a bit of a rough spot in the hobby and right now was one of them. Looking into fish list at Wet Spot and a couple other vendors. Wish Max's Cichlids had not shut down he had other fish I was interested in, lol

Since I may be redoing stock soon, Of interest are Bifa, Synspilum/Melanura, Hartwegi... basically the old 'Vieja" family of fish because of their colors.

I had some of these a while back and i was not impressed with the colors, they were very bland not eye popping
I think Max’s were outdoors getting all that good UV and sunlight. Thats why they were so outrageous in color. Were yours from TUIC? Or COA?

@DMD123 So sorry about the loss of your fish! I know from over the years that you go above and beyond trying to figure out the best treatment when you have a sick one. It sucks when you lose them, especially when you can't figure out why.

I know what needs to be done so I check my supplies and saw that I was out of clove oil... hadnt used it in over 3 years because thats when I remember using it last and ran out. Ordered a bottle to take care of the Midas with the swim bladder issue. I get hope when I see the fish swim normal for a minute but then he relaxes for a moment and he is head down. I almost cried when he came to the glass to interact and then lost his equilibrium and had done this complete upside-down flip that he could not control.

As to what to do with the other two... undecided

Pure midas male (old pic, much bigger + hump bigger)

The Petsmart devil (old pic, much bigger + hump bigger)

While both look good they dont have that much personality. If aggressive is a personality trait, thats what they are.

Been inside today, heat pump having difficulty keeping up. Inside temp at 77 but just watching TV and not moving, lol. Wanted to work on tanks but didn’t want to add humidity to the situation.

How is everyone else doing? Staying cool?

Pretty much the same here; just not enough energy to work in the fish room even though it's reasonably comfortable indoors. Enjoyed watching the Red Sox beat the Yankees at Fenway while drinking a few beers. RI chowder and clamcake dinner with clams I collected from the beach yesterday, and more beer. Think I'll have an ice-cold gin and tonic for dessert. :)

I have friends who live in Houston; they average 100+ days that are this hot every year. Just saying... o_O
