What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Big guy was still alive this morning. Appears to look strong but not really swimming around much. Sitting in back corner of the tank a lot. This is a super deep wound, so I really dont know what to do except clean water. It does not appear infected or anything so Im just letting him be.
Not much else you can do; fingers crossed. :(

Gravel vac and water change on the 300. Trying to heal the big devils wounds.

Of course problems come in 3’s… well here is problem number 2. Large midas swimming weird. Thinking swim bladder issues. Might be after feeding. He tends to float head down and the right himself the kind of do it over and over.

Im thinking this might actually be the third thing since the UV leaking started it all as first.

Took out a piece of Mopani that might have caused the damage to the devil.

Yesterday I rehomed my RTM female and sold all my extra driftwood. Was nice meeting you @Sick Lids and enjoy the fish.

The 90 the RTM came out of currently has my Rhino pleco, I will likely move a trimac in there. Not sure if I should put the elongated one in there to see if it gets more personable or try and see if the original that I liked the most can heal up and become a looker. It had so much damage done to it that its been a slow process to heal. Funny how the ones I think are potential keepers are not showing any red but the two in the divided 30 up for sale are sporting red throats now, lol. Not sure what it is about my whole trimac experience but they just have not been the fish I thought they would be. I had expected much more personality and Im not sure if this is the fish to meet that requirement... For now its heal up the fish and start moving some out.

Dark thoughts as I ponder the fate of the fish in the 300. The devil that is hurt was one of my 'keepers' in that it was a good peace keeper, outgoing personality and did not pick on the bala sharks. The midas that seems to be having swim bladder issues was another 'keeper'. Basically if anything happened to any other fish I had no issues letting these live their life out in a 300 with no other cichlids. Well now with some issues if I were to lose either of them I think I would end up redoing the tank. The two toned Petsmart devil would go, not my favorite. The other two toned midas is a tricky one. It has great color but is a total mean little jerk. Its also a bit of a runt compared to its sibling... so do I keep it in a 90 for life or rehome? Not giving it the 300 to itself.

So I think of possible stock changes in the big tank as I wait to see what happens. Another Pearsei perhaps?

I'm deliberately slacking off on the fish room activities this week, and spending as much time as possible outdoors in anticipation of a brutally hot weekend, when I shall be taking refuge indoors. I've only used the central air a handful of times in the nine years I've owned this house, but for sure I will use it this weekend. 3-4 days in the fish room should allow me to finish the upgrade, and I'm looking forward to that. Here we are, ready to go... :)

With the big devil hurt and not eating at the moment the big midas has been eating the other fishes share of food. This might be the problem, he is eating too much and likely too fast. Gulping too much air with the floating pellets too. When I got home today he was doing the happy dance and begging without an issue. Swimming completely normal. Might try a no floating food feeding with a smaller portion to see what happens.

Might not hurt to treat the entire tank with an antibiotic….. not sure what I would recommend for 300gallons but, i would worry about a secondary infection on the big guy

Did you read my mind? I just treated the tank with that and a low salt dose.

Looks like an ulcer… fingers crossed it heals for you

So I had not thought of an ulcer until @lloyd378 mentioned it. I thought it was just an injury. Interestingly the term 'ulcer' is a bit generic when applied to our fish because it appears these damaged red spots can be caused by parasites or injury and then be called an ulcer. Anyway looks like my best course of action is medicine. I had enough API Fin & Body to do tank treatments so I started with that. It is fish Doxy. I also started a light dosage of salt and will increase concentration a little at a time. Salt is cheap so that will be my long term solution with the Doxy being used at the outset because I have it on hand. If he does not respond well in the next 3 days then I will move him into a 90 and do Kanaplex/salt treatments for a week and see how that goes.

Was feeling bad about my dark mood the other day. Did not mean to bum anybody out. Sometimes a bad fishkeeping day just gets you down. Looking at this with some hope now that I have an idea how to approach this.

Water change day. Pulled a few chancho fry just in case mom and dad decide to feast on them while i am in Vegas.

Midas pair have A LOT of wigglers.

Relocated gypherum to growout tank.

Not to worry; we get it. And we've all been there at one time or another.

I was also suspicious that this might be an internal lesion when I first saw it, but I didn't want to say anything because I thought that might be more worrisome than useful. I do think you're doing all you can at this point, and now it's up to the fish. Fingers crossed.

Dug these interesting terra cotta bricks out of the yard a couple weeks ago, finally got around to cleaning them up with the pressure washer. Going to move a bunch of fish around and toss a lot of larger dovii growouts into the 400 as I feel bad just culling them all. This should give them a bit of protection from the big pair and we'll see if any can survive long term. If they can survive (and change color) they'll hit the jackpot and I'll pull them back out to sell them.

Sort of an artificial reef with lots of nooks and crannies they large pair can't get to. Not pretty but it will work.

Those bricks are super cool looking! I like the idea of the artificial reef!

mid you ever become inundated and need to cull, if they are between 1-2” I know my fahaka puffer would enjoy them ( food not friends).

but here’s hoping they fade sooner than later for you!

I have dealt with many unusual fish diseases over the years and have successfully dealt with some and had others that stumped me to this day. I never have had fish with this one before so I had just assumed a typical decor related injury.

Today I dont know what to make of things. The wound itself seems to look a bit better but the fish is very inactive. Was just sitting on the bottom of the tank a lot this evening. Not really interactive with me or even other tankmates. Of course with the two big fish both having issues, the other two are being total jerks since they are not being put in their place. The midas with the swim bladder issue has not been fed for two days now to see if it helped and not seeming to be a factor.
