What did you do with your tank(s) today?

I was trying to feed the new Guianacura fry some flake food. I dipped my fingers into the tank to break up the flakes and Mary Jane nailed me. She let go pretty quick but continued circling the area and acted like she would attack my fingers anytime I got close to the waters surface.

Got frozen tubifex yesterday instead of bloodworms (only had one) Should have been buying tubifex instead of chopping up bloodworm blocks for a month and a half lol Still learning about these Bettas. But I'm more prepared every day. I'm understanding the genetics, but still trying to wrap my head around describing breeds in traits. That's a bit tough to wrap my brain around. The artistic side is getting it, but the Autistic side is digging deeper.
For hip shot breeding, I did alright expressing unique or nice genes / combinations like pink and black that are difficult.

We just had nice Bettas with traits we liked.

I really can't wait to see what he becomes. The blue ones surprised me last minute.

I have had a lot of great potential. But these pokemon require a bit larger storage lol

IMG_6968.jpegIMG_6951.jpegIMG_7005.jpegIMG_7003.jpegHaven’t been on much as my attention has been focused on my missing Bengal X highland lynx house cat …. Insert sad face here. We were in California last weekend and hand our friend take care of the dogs and cats and our big boy snuck out and jumped the fence when he was letting the dogs back in.

We have searched everywhere and are now offering a 500 dollar reward for anyone that helps bring him back .

On another note, I did water changes on tanks today after my daughter’s morning fastpitch game ( yes it was wet). And then my son and an I went to aquarium paradise for more frozen blood worms. I saw a baseball sized fancy goldfish they had but it wasn’t forsale, dmd…..

On a positive note, I do have an exciting adventure on the horizon and may be asking some of you to help out as I am part of a group from around the USA that is bringing in a large shipment of wild caught hemichromis fasciatus to the states. They have not been imported since .2019.

Right now they are awaiting transport from Africa to New York, and then to our central hub in Colorado. From there, a group of 13 guys ( around the states) will be getting between 10 and 13 small fish. I don’t have the tank space for that many as their conspecific aggression is so high that they will start killing each other off within the week.
I’ll be hitting up some of you cichlid keepers to see if you can find the tank space to raise one out (typically they need to be with larger Central American cichlids so a 3” hemichromis needs to be with a 5-6” Central American cichlid like amphilophus).

We are still at least a month out before they reach Washington, but just planting a seed. They are beautiful fish and I know some of the others that jumped in to help out are planning on selling some off as many people want one.

Extreme chaos in fish room.

Moved the 210 to its new spot and upgraded sump to a 75 for a total system volume of 285 gallons. Set up separate areas for K-1, a fish section, mattenfilter, plant/algae section and return section.

Getting ready to build a stand for the SCA Starfire 150.

Set up QT tanks for:
12 Exodon paradoxus in 55
3 Oscars, 2 green sev and 1 red sev in 20
2 Siniperca chuatsi in 20

Bichirs and datnoid are in a 150 tub temporarily.

Witness the insanity in the photo below.IMG_0528.jpeg

Vacuum/ water changes and moving some fish around. Liking how my wild guppy / peacock Endlers cross is going in some ways lol

Need to pull the magenta ones out. Would be a great super orange strain at some point.

Simple, yes. The end goal of this is just fish like this. Very early beginnings of strains. Still waiting on a veil tail, but nice dots and double sword is good.

I have a tank that has just bugged me from day one. It is the actual tank itself and the built in filtration. The Fluval flex 32.5, while a cool looking tank just has a horrible filter that gets a layer of scum on the surface every time I clean it. I replaced the foam inserts with some higher end aftermarket and it helped a little and now I think I might need to either go bigger on the pump or get aftermarket spray bars or do both. The current pump is rated at 214 gph so do I spend $100 and replace that with a unit that is rated at 500 gph and do spaybars for an additional $50 or just buy a 40B and put one of my Aquaclears on it?

Is the pump in a separate compartment? I like the upgrade idea. Or you could (depending on space) modify it and use fluidized K-1 to prevent that scum film from forming.

Perfect for my latest "pet"
PXL_20240604_012215401.jpg

Loki snatched it up in the backyard. Took another three grabs and drops for me to get to it appearing dead. Scooped it into a small pot and brought it to an empty shoe tote. Tried to get it out of the pot, but it was stuck. Set it in the tub, got the critter carrier out. Its not bleeding, walked like a possum in the carrier before settling in the corner. Gave it a box with a small towel and some soldier fly larvae with a towel over it for now. Wife is on her way home. Hopefully it's ok and I can just put it back over the fence back with its family.

They are pretty cute, especially as babies. Not sure why people get grossed out. They're our only pouched animal left around here IIRC. Prehensile tail, looks a lot like a nice pet store rat to be honest.

One of her employees does relief work at the local wildlife rescue by her work. She's taking it there tomorrow. Apparently under 7 inches can't survive on its own. It did pee in the critter cage though lol

Possums are good to have around since they eat slugs
