What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Does anyone have any tips for moving fish and setups? Moving about 2 hours away to Yakima.
Buckets or Rubbermaid totes. Battery powered air pumps for sure if the fish will be without filters for more than the 2hr trip. If you are able to hang your filters on a tote that will buy you time on the other end for setting up again too.

I just returned from Lynnwood with the new members. These came from a fellow on MFK. The pair had to be plopped in as the bags were not well sealed and one had lost all it's air. Ideal time to add them as all the lights are off in the fish room. Picturs tomorrow.

For the fishes- 5 gallon, food-quality buckets with lids, wrapped with silver thermal insulation material, battery-powered pumps with airstones. :thumbsup
Agreed with this… I’ve moved fish across the mountains many times throughout my college days. The only thing i didn’t do was add an air stone and air pump. My fish seemed to do great. I’ve also bought fish in bend oregon and driven them back to Tacoma the same way. I rocky roads provided enough surface affiliation to keep the fish water oxygenated.

I will add that in my past experiences, my tanks were the last thing I packed up before moving and the first thing I unloaded and setup when I arrived

When i retire in 8 years and relocate to Arizona, this part of the move is going to be difficult. Not sure how i want to do it. I will most likely hire a moving company to do the house, but don't trust them to do the fish, lol. Maybe have them do the house and tanks and i take all the fish and get them temporarily into tubs/totes and get filters on them while the movers make their way down. Regardless, not looking forward to it

How often do you clean them out? I usually clean mine once a month or two and change out the media about every 6 months. My 110s in the garage are needing new media ASAP

in my tanks with permanent plecos, I switched the media to those insert filter pads from some other company so I can just throw them away monthly and rinse them every two weeks.

I usually pull out the bio media bag and rinse in tank water. I will wash the sponge out in tap water, pretty much the equivalent of dropping in a new sponge but saving some money that way. I will scrub down the interior filter walls, impeller and clean out the insides of all tubes. I never replace the bio media, just a good tank water rinse.

No, no, no. Never throw away sponges or ceramic noodles nor rinse in tap water. Only use aquarium water to rinse so that the bacteria are not killed. I only change sponges when they are falling apart and only after a new one has had a month at least to cycle.

Tap water is fine if you're on well water; not so fine if you're on a municipal supply...

You are way more protective with your fish, I just remove and replace and hope the beneficial bacteria in the substrate/ on the plants and wood, will keep it going well. Haha

I always wash the sponge in tap water. To me they are essentially just for solid waste and the bio media for the beneficial bacteria. It really is no different than when you drop in a new sponge. I do replace sponges when they start to fall apart but otherwise rinse and reuse. Ive never had an issue doing this way. I used to run the tank water out of the tank into the utility sink to wash the sponges but just not enough water pressure to get the sponge clean.

Here in Lakewood we had tons of light flickering but no outage. My in laws lost cable, they are on Xfinity so losing the cable meant no internet, phone or cable.

I had asked about battery back up for the bid on our new tankless water heater and the guy said they were not dependable… The heater is gas but the igniter is electric. We do have another plumber coming to bid the Friday and I will ask him about it too. At our last house we had a old type gas 50 gallon tank with a pilot light so even with no power we had hot water.

No power outages here in frederickson….we also. Have a gas hot water tank and gas fireplace so we are typically good even when the power is out.

we did lose Comcast Friday night and most of Saturday from a car wreck on pac Ave. They had to cut all the cords and wires to get the driver out of his truck ( he ran over a power pole and went flying into the golf course).

I just wasn’t in the mood to clean Aquaclear filter in the garage so I worked on the 300 instead with a good gravel vac water change and scrubbed down one Mopani piece.

Looking to redo some plants in the 46g bowfront. Will be rehoming the two Anubias Hastifolia to @John58Ford and trying something different. I want a taller type plant for the back so I might get another anubias nana and mount it to a piece of rock to achieve the height or look at something else thats easy to work with.

I dont have a lot of experience with live plants but my java fern has been thriving and Ive made multiple plants off the original parent and passed some along, my anubias nana has doubled in length and I might be able to make another plant off that soon.

Anyone seeing this post and have ideas of a good starter plant for me, let me know.
