What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Lost the last two mollies. Thought they were doing okay cause I had seen them feeding off the plants but they had not been eating any regular foods. I dont think they escaped their time with the cichlids unscathed, they had patches of scales gone them.

The red wolf fish was swimming around and quite responsive to feeding. Ate a bunch of krill and then settled into his log home and digested. This interaction with him was fun, hope he continues like this. Seems much bolder now, or he was just super hungry.

Spent morning in garage doing some water changes. Tanks look good, so not a lot of work today

Ok, unfortunately, here’s our chance to run a fish store. Sad to see it go, wish I had the money to buy it and run it.4A7C2DCB-CDD2-481F-9ED9-88B98CA0A96A.jpeg

Counted four Sajica this morning, so no losses. The first one is the alpha since it was his tank for a week, and he lets the new ones know it!

Ran to aquarium paradise today to drop off a couple of cichlids and ran into fishguy1978 who was also dropping off some fish to them.

On a side note, they now have 4 pairs of sting ray in stock. Absolutely beautiful! I might venture to say they may be the only store in western Washington to have freshwater rays. I grabbed a couple of pics.

They had 1 pair of motera ( spelling)
1 pair of black diamond
2 pairs of Pearl black diamonds which I learned are a very rare hybrid of two beautiful species.

For higher end animals like rays, local fish stores are generally not the best way to go for many reasons including knowing what you are getting. Hybrids often look very different as they age and without proof of lineage there is no way of knowing what you are getting. Just my thoughts as a ray guy.

Same issues with many African cichlids these days, especially Malawians, sadly enough.

With all the rain, I've been doing lots of work in the fish room this week, not only the usual water changes and filter maintenance, but also quite a bit of stock rearrangement. I have new fry from two different Cyprichromis populations, so the Moms plus midwives plus fry occupy two 40L tanks. You can't mix these populations for fear of hybridization.

I also moved stock from what had been a large grow-out tank into the main colonies, which meant netting several Xenotilapia spilopterus and X. bathyphiius, both of which are really fast fishes that are difficult to catch, especially in planted tanks.

While doing all this I got to use some new fishroom equipment that I treated myself to over the holidays, including a new fill hose and sprayer.

It's about 75 feet from my laundry room to the fish room, and slightly less than that in the other direction to the living room, so I need a long filler hose. Previously I had three 25-foot RV drinking water hoses hooked together, but that was a pain, and they were getting old and stiff, so finally I found this 75-foot drinking water hose that makes things much easier. I even like the gaudy green color, which is fluorescent under the actinic lights, so I might be less prone to trip over it. And finally an adjustable spray nozzle the doesn't leak.

More fish chores, football, and beer today.

Spent the morning doing water changes and some work on a piece of decor. I had got a driftwood ‘stump’ the last time I was at Sierra and had to drill a piece of slate, mount the wood with a stainless steel screw and then take the grinder to the sharp edges.

The piece is from a company called Aquaglobe and they call it ‘Blackwood’. Not sure what it is but it was very hard to drill into and the bit was smoking the wood. I’m currently soaking this in a bucket of hot water to see how it leeches tannins and then it will go into the 90 gallon severum tank. Nice tall, bold presence without really taking up much swimming space.

Edit: went to the Aquaglobe website and the “blackwood” is said to ‘do not discolor water and sink immediately’… at least that is some information

Yesterday evening, I moved the fahaka puffer from the garage 75g to my bedroom 75g. This required gravel vacs and water changes for both tanks and also moving my larger catfish out to my 220g.

I planned to move the festae to the 75g so the 125 would be empty and I could sell it off as I need that space for something else, but she is guarding some fertilized hybrid eggs at the moment ‍

Here’s a short video of the puffer this morning in his new tanks ( lights are off).
