What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Spent the morning doing water changes and some work on a piece of decor. I had got a driftwood ‘stump’ the last time I was at Sierra and had to drill a piece of slate, mount the wood with a stainless steel screw and then take the grinder to the sharp edges.
My girlfriend has a couple of things that look like that in her backyard! :rofl:rofl:rofl

Quick update on the moves…. My 7” Lima shovel nose catfish is no more… just walked out to the garage to find the front half in the mouth of my 14” ornate Bichir.

I figured at 7” it was too big to eat, but I guess it was skinny enough to fit in the ornates mouth. My other ornate is following it around like some sort of fresh fish feeding frenzy.

I’ll leave it in there for a little bit but if they don’t finish it off, I’ll scoop it out after dinner tonight as to not foul up the water .

Big water change on this one today, as my Tropheus setups are my highest bioload tanks. But I really enjoy fussing with this tank because it is in the same room as my main stereo system; today Rippingtons 'Curves Ahead' and 'Black Diamond.'

Your tank is looking good @fishguy1978! And I'm loving how flexible the new green hose is!

Good music choice, love Black Diamond.

So the pearsei move came because of finding two dead Sajica today. One had an obvious bite near its head and was in the process of dying. The other already gone. The marks were the same as what happened on the mollies I tried in there. Sadly these were the two largest Sajica which Im sure one was a dominant male since it was showing red in the fins. So now I need to see if I can find a couple more…

With all the rain, I've been doing lots of work in the fish room this week, not only the usual water changes and filter maintenance, but also quite a bit of stock rearrangement. I have new fry from two different Cyprichromis populations, so the Moms plus midwives plus fry occupy two 40L tanks. You can't mix these populations for fear of hybridization.

I also moved stock from what had been a large grow-out tank into the main colonies, which meant netting several Xenotilapia spilopterus and X. bathyphiius, both of which are really fast fishes that are difficult to catch, especially in planted tanks.

While doing all this I got to use some new fishroom equipment that I treated myself to over the holidays, including a new fill hose and sprayer.

It's about 75 feet from my laundry room to the fish room, and slightly less than that in the other direction to the living room, so I need a long filler hose. Previously I had three 25-foot RV drinking water hoses hooked together, but that was a pain, and they were getting old and stiff, so finally I found this 75-foot drinking water hose that makes things much easier. I even like the gaudy green color, which is fluorescent under the actinic lights, so I might be less prone to trip over it. And finally an adjustable spray nozzle the doesn't leak.

More fish chores, football, and beer today.
Beautiful

For higher end animals like rays, local fish stores are generally not the best way to go for many reasons including knowing what you are getting. Hybrids often look very different as they age and without proof of lineage there is no way of knowing what you are getting. Just my thoughts as a ray guy.
I’d love to try a ray or a pair at some point, but I’m limited in that my largest tank is only a 220g.

Your rays are beautiful!

Today the plan is to leave from work and head to Sierra to replace the Sajica I lost. Hopefully they still have them in stock and that they look good. Usually as the stock lessens there gets to be one dominant one that beats the others down...

Got the last of the Sajica from Sierra. In fact the last one looked a bit rough and they discounted it to $4.99 for me. So the added 4 now brings the count to 6 total. For fun, I fed some mysis shrimp and the new fish attacked it with gusto. With the pearsei gone there should be nothing holding them back from growth except themselves, lol

I checked on the freak hybrid eggs… the female festae ate them once I removed the male red devil so it gave me a chance to move the female to the top 75 g in my stacked system… her is a pic of her w/o breeding dress and also my jag X Dovii down below her

Stopped at Aquarium Paradise after work and looked around. A couple nice large black belts were tempting but no room so they are still there, lol. Bought some frozen foods to stock up. Now with all the small grow outs I will be using this stuff more.

The 6 Sajica look well and they are so small they just disappear in the tank. Tempted to grow out a pair and raise a batch of babies before I focus on the solo male. Also would consider adding a large solo male with the pearsei in the 300. The Sajica really are cool looking when they get full grown.

Had wanted to swap to a light gravel in the Sajica tank so got it done tonight. Did some light gravel vacs in the other 65B and the 90 gallon Oscar tank. Both tanks have plecos that leave a lot of poo.

I think at full grown, the sajica would still get eaten…. My ornates also ate a 4” female convict I had in the tank with them back when they were only 10”….

As for the blackbelts, the one closest to the front door is one I gave them a few months back. He had amazing colors but got super aggressive with my wild caught Oscar so I donated him. He doesn’t look as nice now as he did when he had a larger tank, but I know his colors ( the red) would come back quickly under your care.

The males can get upwards of 6” so a possibility if my endli allows it…

Got in an order from Kens last night.

Ordered some fish food, Omega One (for the community tanks) and Hikari. The Hikari is the floating cichlid excel which is geared more toward plant eating species. I am essentially thinking to stop using the Omega One floating cichlid on the pearsei. I have experienced a temporary 'bloating' in the fish after eating it. Some say this is not possible because the fish produce an enzyme that helps break down the pellets and I have heard others say to pre-soak the pellets. Whatever the case the floating Omega One needs to be fed in moderation because I have had issue with it in the past if the fish over eats it. Hadnt feed the Hikari in years but I think in this case might be better choice. I do wish the Omega One formulas would include a large floating veggie based pellet. I end up jus breaking up the Veggie Rounds and feeding those.

Interestingly I ordered a few packs of tube cleaning brushes and they were sold as Marina products but when they came in were all now Fluval. So the assumption is that this was a move to rebrand under one of the more name recognized companies. Kind of like the change in Aquaclear filters.,used to be Hagen now also changed to Fluval.
