Yard work...

This is a Bloodgood Maple that I bought at the Home Depot about 10 years ago. It was just a little thing, but it had a nice multi-trunk habit, and with a bit of training over the years it has turned into quite a pretty tree. To give you a sense of scale, the Juniper hedge behind it is about 7 feet tall.

Went back and looked at some pics

Sept 2021 - I think this was the intense heat year and the Maple was thrashed, wasnt sure if it would survive. Went from a pot into the ground that year.

In 2022, the heat didnt kill it and it looked fuller

Got this seedling from under my bloodgood. Im wondering if it is from my 'Lileeannes Jewel' variegated maple on the other side of the fence. It is pretty fragile and Im not sure if it will make it but I will grow it out a bit if it lives.

Don't you just love late-bloomers? If you look carefully you might be able to see that this planting is actually composed of three different Camellia plants, each of which is a different color, and blooms at a different time. White comes first, then pink, then red, around Christmas.

Same here. We took a truckload of leaves away last week; another truckload scheduled for Friday, and that will be most of it. The late-droppers are my Bloodgood Maple and two Parrotias that flank it; they have yet to drop most of their leaves, but they drop on the lawn, so it's an easy clean-up.

Windstorm knocked out two sections of fence and one post

I want to replace the bad post and pop the panels back in but the wife wants to replace the whole back fence, lol.

The problem is that the previous people who built the fence, spaced the posts unevenly, didn't do crossbeams in an aesthetically pleasing way, and used 5ft tall boards instead of 6ft. That extra foot to fence height would give a lot more privacy. I think Ive convinced the wife to just do the repair for now...

Wif and I had decide to go ahead and replace the old fence entirely instead of just replacing one post and repairing the two fallen sections. Some of the main reasons were that the previous people who put in the fence did some really odd spacing on the posts and they also only did 5 foot boards instead of 6 foot. We do have a slope across the back that would place the side on the right about 6-8" higher than where it ends up on the left but we are going to try and maintain six foot height all the way across and do the step down behind our shed.

The taller fence will make so we see less of the neighbors delipidated shed and maybe a bit less of their backyard door (and messy yard). Our contractor already removed the old fence today. He was drilling out the post holes today and trying to set the posts, then concrete them in for tomorrow.

A couple older pics to show where the 5' tall fence ends up. The fence on the right side of the property is a 6' tall we had installed already. If you look closely you can tell it is noticeably taller than the fence along the back... that 1 foot makes a difference.

Two of the old posts gave the contractor trouble and he needs to dig them out for new posts to go in. But all the others are in place and ready for concrete tomorrow.

I also built a fence for eyesore amelioration on my waterfront landing last year. The Pampas grasses will fill the space eventually, but the fence was to make a point.

Post getting concrete today

Two posts had to be longer so that we could maintain a consistent 6' across and the fence boards in that area are going to be slightly longer than 6' so that it will conform to the change in the slope across the 70 foot span.

Very happy we decided to proceed with this project. My wife and I have made it a goal to accomplish something on the house each year of significance or improvement and this year was the back fence. When it warms up I think I will stain it like the fence we did on the right hand side of the back yard.

Having the full 6ft now gives a much better sense of privacy.
