What did you do with your tank(s) today?

Setting up an appointment for Alex. She's due for a check up and I think she's gravid. Walking like she needs to poop and I think I feel small soft balls but not sure. Definitely uncomfortable when I probe, but also seems soothed by light rubbing down the middle and a good soak earlier. She dug herself a nice burrow, is hanging out in there during the day but sleeping above on her branch so she can bask in the morning then go rest. All normal behavior/ signs for brumation and being gravid. Definitely a big girl dragon :)

Doing this sort of thing a lot to relax her tummy.

Well with the loss of a fish in any tank, I always end up doing a water change. Just one of those paranoid things.

The goldfish are super messy so they are getting two cleanings a week that involves the mag-float to the glass and a light to medium gravel vac. These guys make for a lot of hard work! They also renewed interest in the hobby for me, was getting bored with the cichlids and bichirs.

Also modified my sponge for the penguin filter

So far it seems to be working with no back pressure. I know my fish is messy but it was shocking how quickly the factory cartridge was clogged. I had pulled it a few days back and flushed it with tank water and it was still clogged to the point of not being usable. If I were to use cartridges on a single goldfish in the 20H, I would only get about one week per cartridge. Hope my sponge mod works long term.

Filthy little pigs lol The swamp grass and willow do a great job of keeping the water healthy, but the bog filter still needs a good flushing out 2-3 times a season. The fish get bigger, the filters get bigger lol

Alex showing off her egg lumps. Hopefully she passes them easily then can go about her brumation after hopefully eating a lot. Her first gravid cycle. Guess she'll be driving cars and off to dragon college soon lol

Moved the SHOGUN oranda out of QT and into the big tank. The 20H is now clean and ready to house another fish that was intended for the other goldfish tank. Still looking for that fish.

At some point I'll put two Bettas together again and move the babies into here to grow up lol Until then it's full of life eating well on the new food mix I'm trying on this tank (others are using taro) This culture is being fed fermentation water from mung beans, crushed red pepper, pollen and yeast. Draw off the fermentation water and a few beans for the scuds and top off the water with aquarium water. Not sure if there is other microfauna growing in there, probably though lol It's the goal, but it's a brownish green color so who knows. All good stuff to feed the fish food with.

Hope he's a good father like his Grandfather was. Daddy was a bit too young and stupid lol
Butterfly tricolor, no cruddy feathering of the tail, but he does have split ventrals. I don't care about show points, I like them. He doesn't have big fin extensions thanks to the Cambodian gene so they're reasonably sized and don't alter his swimming like they do in the full blue.

Did a little Cyber Monday shopping and bought a new heater and some other supplies online this morning. Not really very impressed with the sales going on this year but needed the heater and it was decently priced.

Been kind of a relaxing week in fish keeping. With no fish in the hospital tank or in quarantine, Im back to just a regular water change routines. None of this daily or every other day stuff. I have just enjoyed watching and feeding the fish this week.

The goldies are still my favorite fish right now. So interactive and colorful. My puffer and EBJD are also a lot of fun.

My other community tank with the serverums is another tank Im enjoying.

My red wolf is still plugging along but I just dont see how its still alive. Can barely see with the cataracts, is at the point where it sometimes completely misses a food pellet and then the food sits at the bottom rotting. This is an issue since its Hikari Massivore and will stink up the water. I know in nature this guy would be a goner since he floats up at the top water surface and a bird would have snatched him at this point, lol. But I guess Im taking too good of care of him since he is still around.

Did some water changes yesterday, need to scrape the glass on the sorority and baby goldfish tanks again and probably adjust the timers a bit. It's not bad, but I think an hour or so less would help. Contemplating splitting the daphnia 8 gallon and moving some into the other 2.5 once I rearrange the top rack a little. Want to have both 2.5 side by side front to back so I can better arrange and access the air pumps and have room for a couple plants to get more light.

OMG fishguy and DMD I'm so sorry to hear about your losses, literally bigger than mine! :(

And DMD, if you see white bumps on the gill covers and/or leading pec rays of one or more goldfish, that's a male and there's a female in season in the tank. I'm no expert but learned about sexing them 30 years ago when I read up on it after a surprise breeding happened between my female calico fantail and male comet in my first successful tank when they were both roughly 9-10 months old. Females have kind of a pointed vent at all times, but its not as reliable a way to tell. I miss those two, definitely regret selling them.

Yesterday I cleared out about half my floating water sprite to allow Parona (panda garra) access to the cyano at the very top of the spiderwood. Sai (betta) is finally getting back to normal behavior and building nests again, not alternating between depressed and angry-chasing. And this morning I noticed something interesting: the Minions (blue rasboras) are loosely schooling with him, with the sentinel who used to monitor the kuhli now keeping an eye on him - and the Minions all running TO his area if they get nervous. Maybe they bonded watching the kuhli die together and then the subsequent death of Their Queen. *shrug* They mostly avoid Ms. Playful-Divebomber Parona, but she and Sai chase eachother regularly so she's not left out of social interactions entirely.

I've decided to not upset this delicate balance by adding another fish of any kind while Sai is alive, and Parona is doing an admirable cleanup job by herself, but I do want a fancy snail or some shrimp eventually.

Out and about today. She's getting ready for brumation but she's also in her first gravid cycle (pretty sure) Actually had an appetite for greens today and ate a lot of greens before I even added any roaches :) Hopefully she passes eggs in the next two weeks or so. Her tummy is sensitive and quite literally ticklish if you hit the right spots. You can kind of feel little jelly beans in her stomach. Sleeping a lot, basking in the morning has been her usual the last week or two. Today she's glass surfing, hungry and walking like she needs to poop.
Refilled her soaking tub since she's out. Hopefully she has a nice soak at some point. Don't want to force her or anything. Just have comfortable options open to her. Maybe in another week or so I'll actually put her in there if she seems uncomfortable.

She definitely looks like she's in what us female humans call 'I'm tired of being pregnant! Get these effing things out of me! FOOD DAMMIT!' phase. XD

Weekend tank cleaning and water changes like usual. Sunday afternoon I went to Midway and Sierra and just looked around. Was surprised by Midway which had really stepped up their game. Someone is really keeping the tanks clean and fish looked really good. Sierra was a disappointment, they seem to be seriously going downhill as to fish tank care and selection.

I did manage to go to both places and not come home with anything. Nothing really interesting to me at this point but a visit to the fish store always makes me think about the future of my tanks.
