My latest obsession, a fancy goldfish. This one was a bit expensive ($250 +$55 shipping) since it was from a very specific farm (Shogun Farms).
This is the exact fish I ordered.
My concern is the musical tanks I may have to play if this fish gets to the potential size they say they can get. My Yuan Bao oranda can get about 6"-8" in and have the same bulky build but the SHOGUN oranda have been know to get in the 10"-12" range. Would for sure move up to the bigger tank and would have to move other fish around too. Probably will eventually just put goldfish in the 300, lol

Fish actually got here close to the quoted time, about 3pm. Looks healthy but very unhappy with the trip. Seems very lethargic at this point as it’s acclimating. Normally I wait to open the bag but this time added an airstone and am slowly adding tank water to its bag to acclimate. Maybe the cold temps were a bit much for it and it will take a bit longer to settle in. Wish the seller would have added warming pack but not completely needed at this point.
Surrounded by darkness since last night, and although I lost my internet connection until just a few minutes ago, I never lost power. That's in contrast to most other places on the Liberty Bay shoreline, including the Poulsbo Yacht Club, which rarely loses power. I do have a generator for these events, but even so...
Folks on the eastside of Seattle have not been so fortunate; what a mess! Most of Mercer Island, where I lived previously, is still without both power and an estimate for its restoration. I was without power for several days after the Hanukkah Eve storm in 2006, and without a generator backup, suffered big losses in my fish room. No fun at all.

Lost power at the house (I'm in OKC) for about 12 hours. My wife told me everything was fine. I had forgotten about the air pump having an internal battery, so I'm sure that helped. Regardless everything is back on and doing good.

Family in Duvall lost power overnight, but luckily not here near U District. Going forward, getting a battery powered air pump seems like a good idea.
I tried putting some algae covered stems in the shrimp tank thinking that the shrimp would clean them over the next couple days. They ended up mobbing the plants and everything was gone in a couple hours haha.

When we bought our home we did a full gut remodel. I wish I would have done a transfer box back then when we did the new electrical panel. Then a generator to that and I would be set to handle the power outage. Granted in the 10 years we have been in the home, we haven’t lost power for more than a couple hours at a time but I really would feel better to be prepared. Right now I have like 7 battery powered air pumps and extra batteries on hand for them all. It keeps some water circulating but cant keep tanks warm.
I hear you. There are lots of trees etc. where I live, so power outages are a fact of life, and it is unusual to go through a whole winter without one or more full-day and/or overnight outages, each of which is a challenge to my fish room. That said, if I never have another outage again, the generator has been well-worth the expense just for my peace of mind. And it has already paid for itself, as it cost just a fraction of what I have invested in my fish room.

Strangely enough, my house was built in 1900 and is very well insulated. So it holds warmth well. I also have a wood stove if it gets too cold. So heat isn't much of an issue. Thankfully.
When we did the remodel it was a choice to keep an old fireplace that took up an 8 foot wall area or repurpose the area for my 300 gallon aquarium. I chose the new aquarium, lol. Been happy with that choice.
Our property was covered in trees that were just stupidly planted or let grow too close to the house and driveway. We removed a bunch of badly place trees so the danger to our property was greatly reduced. We replanted the correct sized trees for the locations we picked. Still have the need to pour a new driveway from tree damage but we did some temporary patching that is getting us by.
Right now without electricity we have no heat since we are on an electric heat pump. Also no hot water since we have a gas tankless but it requires electricity to operate. If we installed a heavy duty battery back up on the water heater then we could at least have hot water which would allow me to replace water in the tank with warm water...
Who knows, maybe in the near future a small generator maybe in our future.

IMO it's not a move you'll ever regret. My place is 100% electric, so without power I don't even have running water (or functioning toilets).

Huge is good. It's a carp after all lol My large male still has some potential left, but he's a good size now and a lot bigger than ones selected for small size anatomies. I should link a video that was uploaded recently by a Goldfish geneticist going over the body types and anatomical differences.

DMD - love the big puffies! Looks like that one might be a girl if I'm correctly seeing her vent tipping out. If I owned my own place I'd have to have at least a few in a nice big tank. Ever thought of throwing in a head of lettuce and seeing how long it takes them to demolish it? XD
Regarding my 6 gal, water changes every other day and dumping in Prime and Quick Start worked again, as nitrites and 'trates tested all the way down to zero this morning. Water sprite needs removal again, and I put in half a dose of Easy Green.
Been able to observe the Minions (blue rasboras) more since Ryan (kubotai)is gone, and noticed that the one I thought was a decolored sub-male that was tasked with watching the late kuhli is actually a female who has no mate and still is on the edge of the group or alone. The other four are mated pairs that stick together, with both males fully colored up. Sai (betta), who'd been on an absolute nest building tear since I installed the Sicce filter last month, hasn't built a one since she died, either. And he's been angry-chasing Parona (garra), which is unusual for him, when he's not sitting listlessly in the water sprite. Considering that he and the blues watched the kuhli die, I'm pretty sure at this point at least some fish have SOME concept of death, even if its just 'predator not gonna eat me anymore'.
Ironically I went to my LFS yesterday to get some supplies and they had kubotais again for the first time in a long while. No, I didn't buy one (tho I'm tempted to see if the lone blue and a single kubotai would buddy up, I'd rather see if I can somehow get another blue male, which is unlikely given stores usually won't sell such small fish based on sex).

Ive never tried to sex my fish. Some vendors will sex the fish on the website with a 'no guaranty' clause. My recent fish was said to be male...DMD - love the big puffies! Looks like that one might be a girl if I'm correctly seeing her vent tipping out.
Ive not tried to feed any actual green leafy products yet, I hear they can really go at it. Im going to have to give it a try one of these days.

Making a "pigeon strip" for the cats. Prototype but going to print two more then rework again for the 20's. Once I'm done I'll creat file packs for different aquarium sizes and upload them for anyone else with a printer to use.
