What is the most you’ve ever spent on a fish?

I am so sorry to hear that!
It's all good. The GI obstruction turned out to be something that passed after several days of hydration with a 24-hour IV drip. Things started to turn around last night, and an ultrasound before his scheduled surgery earlier today confirmed the good news. No surgery required. I was able to bring him home this afternoon. So relieved.

I don't know, but it's trivial compared to the cost of keeping my other pets. One of my kitties has been in the emergency animal hospital in Lakewood for the last 4 days, and may require surgery tomorrow, and the cost of that care is rapidly approaching the price of a new Honda. But if he can be cured, it is all well worth it.
Totally agree, my 2 girls ( Miniature Schnauzers) and 2 boys (desert lynx and highland lynx) were not cheap and well worth every penny. They are my kids.

As for fish, it's my pleco collection. Several cost over $100.

As time goes on you get deeper into the hobby and pretty soon your interest turns towards fish you just cant find normally in the fish stores. Next thing you know you are ordering fish online and paying for shipping them. This has made my price limits go up since the majority of the time Im paying at least $50 just in shipping cost.

I had cheaped out on a lot of my recent goldfish purchases by going with 2 day air and most came in okay, but some had difficulties with this. My last fish I splurged a bit and did next day air, and wow what a difference. Fish acclimated very quickly compared to the 2 day air fish. That vendor also had pretty reasonable prices with shipping and it was barely any more to get the upgrade.

I feel as if Im 'mostly done' with my stock in the fish room but may get just one more goldfish. Been wanting a Shogun farms 'Godzilla' oranda and likely will splurge on next day shipping with that one.

Oh I know about how deep it can get. When I was single my apartment was full. 8 tanks in a 1 bedroom was my limit. But at the time Houston had a very active community so I was able to get most of my stock from other hobbyists. Right now I'm holding off until we move into a bigger house so that I don't have as much trouble moving stuff. I plan on having many more and eventually a marine tank. But right now I have to scratch my itch with the 75g and 20g. But, one day! Lol

I joke about the single thing but the reality is I have more tanks (and total gallons) now that Im married than at any point when I was single. When I got married I had already been out of fishkeeping for 15 years or so. Then about 5 years into our marriage I tell her I used to keep fish and want to get another tank... Little did she know it would lead to 7 tanks one day, lol.

Yeah, she's good with a lot of my stuff and enjoys the fish. But again I have to temper myself till more room to expand.

I'll leave you married folk to discuss the effects of marital status on fish room size, but getting back to the original question, there is little doubt that for the vast majority of fish keepers, the price of the fish is a small fraction of the price of the fish room.

Definitely is.

When I was running planted tanks, few months operating cost was more than fish combined.

I overspend when fish gets sick as well, my first paradise gourami jumped out of the tank, I bought aquarium salt and I think seachem stress guard. 2 days ago, I bought $25 tank lid and $50 heater for 20 long hospital tank to house my peacock that I bought for $5.

On original topic of fish purchase. My flowerhorn was my most expensive fish I bought for $70 but I think I spent $50 shipping.

It's also deceiving when you just consider the price of a single fish. For example, most Tropheus populations sell for an average of $30-40 per fish, but you can't keep an individual fish, or even a small group: to keep them successfully you need a colony of 15-20 individuals, and that can obviously get expensive.
