Restocking my 300, ideas?

Well I think I made up my mind and really want a water cow goby the most. I need to get my fish room set up the way I want so that I have a qt tank available. I have my name in with multiple vendors and have asked for an update when they get them in.

From what Ive seen in videos they seem very personable. After having kept a red wolf fish, I would love a bigger type of wolf for the 300 but I don’t think it would be community friendly. So I think the goby would be the next best thing.

I saw that aquarium paradise had two small jardini arrowanas in. Both super healthy. But at $299 each, I had to pass.

Okay, so I am seriously considering an arowana. Ive read that the Black tends not to have as many issues with drop eye and are pretty calm with tank mates so that one is on my list. The jardini is also one I like because it is a bit more reasonable in size for me but also known to be uber aggressive which is making me rethink it.

Drop eye should be preventable given the right food ( floating food) and the absence of fish below an arrowana….

When we had our large ones in college, they both had one eye drop on them. I blame it on having some catfish on the bottom that they always kept an eye on.

They are truly beautiful as they swim and I think with your 300g, adding some current makers would make them real happy.

If you want one that will work with a community, I’d recommend a black or a silver. The jardini is a voracious predator and anything that fits in its mouth will become dinner. Take my new 4-5” jardini…..it has grown in the few weeks I’ve had it about an inch already. It eats floating pellets, but as I type this, it has also eaten 10x 2-2.5” pearl danios. I am down to 1, and last night, I noticed that he was swimming lower in the tank, trying to size up my adult serpae tetras. I think they are ok, because they are a wee bit too tall to fit in his mouth.

I think you may also want to think about price….. silvers are the cheapest, and honestly the most graceful when they swim from side to side. Jardinis have really cool markings too, but they look like a hybrid between a standard fish and a silver arrowana, so they are super interesting too. I’ve never owned a black arrowana, but as adults, they look almost identical to the silvers to me, so they may not be worth the asking price.

I agree. The whole attraction of the Arowana back in the day was the sinuous swimming movements, and when the Jardini entered the hobby, it was like a truncated version that had lost all that grace. These fishes don't do much besides swim and eat, and the silver is at least pretty when it is swimming; the Jardini, not so much. I had a silver that I grew up from ~2" to god-awful-big many years ago, probably the last non-cichlid that I kept besides scavengers, and once it was grown the novelty had worn off, and it was eating me out of house-and-home.

I know @fishguy1978 lost his due to a jumping incident, which I see is actually quite a common thing amongst the silvers from all the research Ive been doing. my tank will have the thicker glass lids but even then Ive heard of people putting weights on the tank to prevent jump outs

@sir_keith, thanks for the input on the feeding aspect... Im sure a big fish can really pack away the food so I do need to consider what I am willing to spend on feed.

Im at the serious research stage of things right now. Have not decided 100% that I will get one but it seems one of the most unique choices. I still would love a water cow goby or after having kept a red wolf fish would consider a bigger type of wolf for the 300 also.

You’d need an indoor pond like the large aquarium at point defiance….. haha

With that said, I’ve said the same thing about owning one. Except I’d want to keep mine in a large biodome….. that’s what I’ve always wanted to build if I won the mega millions as I have always wanted to grow my own tropical fruit in Washington , but now I’d also add in an indoor pond and small stream / creak/ river meandering through my tropical fruit trees and plants.
