I kept dwarf puffers for a couple of years. They loved to eat shrimp, but would take their time. After all, they have tiny stomachs. They like to hunt the shrimp down and pounce, taking out the eyes first so they can't run away. It sounds awful, but since there isn't any blood, it's actually quite entertaining. I bought ghost shrimp when I knew I'd be out of town for a weekend so they'd have food. You can always try it, but my experience says you'll just be buying expensive food for them.

From the comments of people who tried it said your pretty much doomed, so putting in a few more shrimp is probably just make it easy for the puffer to grab one up. no need to wait then, just add them in there.

Mine lives with four sunkist shrimp he never goes near. From what I have read its on a puffer by puffer basis. Some do just fine with tank mates.. others not so much. If your lil guy lets the shrimp live for any length of time I think you are fine lol. My scarlet badis pounced the first chance they got. Plus if his tank is interesting enough and he has a variety of food he will always go the easier route, an frequently hunting shrimp isnt easiest.
