MOSS!! (low tech 40 gallon)

Hey just ordered some weeping moss from london, great customer service, profuct came in good enough time, and was in great shape. They also sent an "xmas sample" which turned out to be more then the willow moss, but I'm not complaining. I was just going to post pics of the moss but some cories insisted they got some cam too.

If that hadn't grown at all I probably would not have jumped on the others, and I currently have quit a bit of the java in several places.

Nice! Update us on the growth of the weeping moss. I think that's a rarer type, dont see it often.

Java moss seems to be the only moss I can grow & it grows on everything. Its not bad as long as I keep it trimmed back.

I suck at growing moss. I originally got a sandwich bag or two from Tanya, and now I'm probably down to 1/2 a bag. It just falls apart when I move it, and refuses to grow. I've used mesh, rocks, wood, just about everything.

CrazedAce- I have had the best luck when I just ignore my java moss, I don't think it likes to be fussed over at all. In fact, I brushed the heater up against some of it a while ago, and it browned up immediately and is still recovering now. It might just need time to get going before you try to move it. I find that shrimp also help to keep it nice and clean and keep it from rotting, at least my red cherry shrimp like to graze on it. They are able to clean it without physically damaging it like we do with our big, clumsy hands. Those are my tips, from my very limited experience with it.

Agreed with LuminousAphid, just tie the moss to something and leave it alone, as long as it gets at least a little light, it will grow

Just tied a string around the moss on the fake tree. Now I just pluck extra growth and put it in the shrimp tank.

I've had it tied, banded, woven, and left all alone for months with no growth. My biggest clump actually got covered with black hair algae so I threw it all away. I can grow just about everything besides the moss. I keep my 10gal bristlenose and RCS breeder tank with Java moss, and it never grows. I've tried all seven tanks that are different sizes have different lights and different fish/shrimp. I've also moved once, but I suppose it could be water from Shelton that just sucks.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. How much did you pay for the moss? Looks like they tossed the freebies in to increase the cost of shipping. From ounces to pounds. Lol

Total cost was 10.99, I paid 7.99 for the weeping moss, and 3.00 for shipping. The xmas moss was a "sample". I'm slowly building my stock for a new aquascape I have in my head. Did anyone notice the anubias 'petite'? I'm getting 3 more, they are part of it too. This stuff is just sitting in the bottom of this tank.

UPDATE!!!!!

All my mosses, As the moss turns, And guiding moss. All right here folks, lets chat about it .
I noticed that both the xmas and the willow had grown a bit, so, I attached the xmas to a piece of slate, and the willow to a rock, or 3. Heres what it looks like now.

all tied down, I heard you want to go thin with this stuff and prune heavy if you want it to attach itself and spread like a carpet. And, that is what I want it to do. Although,  regular pruning is necessary.

The willow moss had grown nicely out of the mesh it came in so I put on some rocks.  Here are some pictures.
