Edit 10/5/24: FREE! a 4" Gold Male Ranchu Goldfish / pick up only Lakewood

Fish was originally acquired as an 'Apache' which showed as a black back. I was very uneducated at the time and didnt realize that black in goldfish is very unstable and the fish has turned a light orange and the black has almost entirely disappeared. While it is a happy, healthy fish, I am looking for more unique features in my goldies. This guy was purchased from golfishisland online and has a very nice shape and 'cuteness' factor for sure. Eats well and I have not had any issues with swim bladder issues, but I am feeding a sinking pellet.

Picture included is a bit older, it has even less black now, a couple spots and tail edges.

Edit 10/5/24: BUMP - This was a $60 fish (+ shipping) and its healthy and happy just not the color I was looking for.

I really dont want to deal with posting him up on craigslist, would prefer if a Fishbox member got him, that way he doesn't end up in a tiny bowl.

Poor fish: rejected because he lost his youthful allure...
Still youthful and alluring, just wanting my stock to be a certain way. The problem with goldfish is that certain colors are very dominant and then yoyu end up with fish that are all the same color, lol

Another fish that changed was my lemon head white oranda, the yellow head disappeared and now its all white, a bit disappointing but the all white is different than the others so it’s a keeper

I'm really surprised that there is still this kind of phenotypic variation in these fishes after so much selective breeding. Generally one of the first goals in developing a new strain is to ensure that it breeds true, which obviously is not the case here.

I think @lloyd378 had compared it to 'peeling' that happens in some cichlids. I hadnt known this color change could happen with goldfish but it can. I guess even the famous 'Black Moor' as they age can lose the black that they are known for. A lot of learning these facts... after the fact, lol
